Radioactive Fluids

All of the Royal Navy’s submarines are now nuclear powered and refitting & refuelling is essential for maintaining safety and operational efficiency throughout a submarine’s service life. Before any such work takes place, the primary circuit of the submarine’s PWR is decontaminated and Hayward Tyler canned motor pumps play an important role in this process.

Hayward Tyler canned motor pumps are used in the refit & refuelling facilities for the Swiftsure, Trafalgar and Vanguard class of nuclear submarines. For various applications throughout the refitting & refuelling complex Hayward Tyler canned motor pumps were selected due to their high integrity, sealless / leakproof design.

Typical applications include their use in the primary and intermediate chemistry control loops. For these applications models 6CCVH-20D-12-6S and 6CCAH-3D-751-2S were respectively selected. Key design features of these pumps include the pumps being manufactured in accordance with ASME III NC with ultrasonically tested solid forged pump casings incorporating weld neck connections. Significantly the complete pump assemblies were seismically qualified to meet the nuclear safety requirements of the refit & refuelling complex.
